What are some foods that a person with acid reflux or GERD must absolutely AVOID (specifics please not just..)
vague like “things with acid”.
Apparently my doctor told me I have GERD which is GastroEsophagael Reflux Disease so I need to know what I can and cannot eat. Please help, any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciates
I hope this helps. A lot of problems come from how/what we eat and combine our foods together. Let me explain.
It was the first time I cooked dinner for my then-boyfriend. I didn’t know it back then, but my own cure began with a question from this man who would later become my husband(Mike)
Shortly after we met, I made dinner for him and he asked if it would be alright if he didn’t eat one of the foods I had prepared. He said it all looked wonderful, but that the combination would give him a stomach ache. I didn’t know what he meant, since nothing was fried and no hot spices were used.
It was then that he asked me the question that literally changed my life forever!
Mike asked me, “Have you heard of food combining?”
My immediate answer was “no” I hadn’t heard of it. Even though it wasn’t anything new, and had been endorsed by many health experts, peak performance experts and celebrities and more – I really had never heard of FOOD COMBINING.
After hearing about how “mis-combining” leads to acidosis, acid-reflux, heartburn and a host of other digestive problems, I had my first “properly combined” meal…
And I HAD ABSOLUTELY NO SYMPTOMS WHATSOEVER!
NO PAIN! NOTHING!
That’s right…
NO cramps
NO bloated stomach
NO excessive gas
NO ‘IBS’
NO acid reflux
NO constipation
NO running to the bathroom
NO horrendous pain
Can you imagine how relieved I felt after all those years? If you have ever suffered any of these symptoms, even mildly, you will understand why I was wild with joy!

Heartburn Gerd
Heartburn or gastroesophageal reflux disease GERD is a painful burning sensation in the oesophagus caused by acid rising from the stomach. Heartburn is usually felt just below or behind the breastbone the pain may also be felt in your chest and your neck or throat.
Most people will experience heartburn occasionally however if you are regularly experiencing heartburn you may have GERD.
Usually when you swallow food or liquid it enters your stomach then the muscle at the end of your oesophagus closes. If this muscle doesn’t close correctly stomach contents can back up into the oesophagus. This partially digested food is acidic and can irritate the oesophagus, causing heartburn.
Heartburn should not be ignored especially if it is happening regularly. Over time ongoing heartburn can damage the lining of your oesophagus and cause serious problems. However making changes to your diet and eating habits can go a long way to preventing heartburn and other symptoms of GERD.
Foods that should be avoided to reduce the occurrences of heartburn include
Alcohol
Caffeine, carbonated drinks
Chocolate
Citrus fruits and juices
Tomatoes and tomato sauces
Spicy or fatty foods, full-fat dairy products
Peppermint and spearmint
Smoking
You should also give some thought to your eating habits for instance eat smaller meals as a full stomach puts extra pressure on your oesophagus making heartburn more likely.
Don’t eat within 2 to 3 hours before going to bed.
If you smoke stop
Regular exercise and looking after your weight will also help avoid or reduce instances of heartburn
If you are experiencing ongoing regular attacks of heartburn you should consult your doctor to check for any underlying problems.

Is there any drinks I CAN take with my acid reflux?
I’ve been told by my doc to lay off coffee and tea and fruit juices and I’m drinking lots of water while I have this acid reflux, but it there any drinks I can take? I have managed my diet okay, but i’m finding just drinking water a drag. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks
Ask your doc about DECAF tea, hot & cold. It seems to be the caffeine that really causes GERD.
Also, look into drinks like Crystal Light and decaf soda, Ginger Ale, etc.
An Acid Reflux Diet is the Best Treatment for This Condition
GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease) is not actually a disease. A condition is brought on by poor eating habits. Eating the wrong food and not chewing your food properly is the main cause of acid reflux. This condition can be overcome with proper eating habits. An
acid reflux diet is your best option to get back on a healthy eating track.
If your acid reflux flares up at night then you could be eating too much at dinner or too much before bed. Eating large meals will cause the stomach to produce too much acid. Try to eat smaller and more frequent meals during the day. Including foods that are high in complex carbohydrates are good for an acid reflux diet. These foods include rice, pasta and breads. They can tie up excess stomach acid, thus making them easier on your stomach.
If you are serious about an acid reflux diet then you will want to avoid foods that are high in fat content. These foods remain in your stomach longer, which requires more stomach acid to aid in the digestion of these foods. Beer is a common contributor to acid reflux because it doubles your stomach acid in just one hour. Wine and pop also are contributors to acid reflux.
Not everyone’s acid reflux diet plan is the same. There could be foods that trigger it for you and for someone else; those same foods may not cause a problem at all. It is important to see a doctor, because they can help you work on a plan that is best suited to you. You can then experiment with different foods to determine what the main culprits are in your diet.
Regardless of what you ultimately decide on for your own acid reflux diet plan, other factors that will help you deal with this condition. Do not lie down right after you have eaten a meal. You should remain in an upright position for at least forty-five minutes after eating. When you do lie down, elevate your head about six to eight inches.
In conclusion, if you suffer from an acid reflux condition, consult a physician and start to work on changing your eating habits. You will be thankful that you have taken that first step to an acid reflux diet.

what does indigestion feel like
what does indigestion feel like

What do you do if you have indigestion and it feels like you have something stuck in your throat?
I’m pregnant
Indigestion is when you feel uncomfortable or have pain after eating. The medical name for indigestion is dyspepsia.
Indigestion is very common and most people have it from time to time. For some people its very mild and doesnt happen very often perhaps only after a large meal or particularly rich food. For others, it can be very painful, and sometimes feels as if you are having a heart attack.
Indigestion isnt a disease or condition, but a collection of symptoms. The main symptom is pain in the chest, which is often called heartburn. Feeling bloated, uncomfortably full or having a lot of wind (burping) are other symptoms.
Indigestion can sometimes be a sign of a condition affecting the digestive system. You should see your GP if you get indigestion a lot, it is particularly painful or you suddenly start getting it after never having it before.
The main symptom of indigestion is pain in the chest or top of the abdomen. This usually comes on soon after eating or drinking, but there can sometimes be a delay between eating a meal and having indigestion.
Heartburn is another common term used to describe indigestion symptoms. It is usually felt as a burning pain behind the breastbone (in the front of your chest, over the heart). Heartburn happens when acid from the stomach is regurgitated (brought back up) into the oesophagus (gullet). This is called acid reflux.
If heartburn is very painful, it can sometimes feel as if you are having a heart attack.
Heartburn is also one of the main symptoms of is gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). For most people, heartburn only happens occasionally after a particularly big, fatty or spicy meal. GORD should be suspected if symptoms occur often and after any type of food.
Other symptoms of indigestion include:
Loss of appetiteNausea and vomiting.Flatulence, burping or belching.
Treatment depends on what is causing your indigestion.
If you have been diagnosed with a related condition, such as peptic ulcer or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, you can find more information about treatment in the topics listed in the Health Encyclopaedia.
For most mild cases of indigestion, making simple changes to your diet and lifestyle can help:
Eat small, regular mealsReduce the amount of fat in your dietAvoid foods that you know trigger symptoms, such as spicy or rich foodsCut down on the amount of alcohol you drinkStop smokingManaging stress better and sleeping slightly propped up on two pillows can also help.
Your GP may recommend making changes to your current medication if they think it is causing the problem. (You should not stop taking any medication without consulting your GP first).
Non-prescription medicines
You can buy a range of non-prescription medicines from your pharmacy to help relieve mild indigestion, including:
Antacids e.g. magnesium trisilicate, magnesium hydroxide, aluminium hydroxide.
Antacids are useful for occasional bouts of indigestion. They relieve symptoms by neutralising the acid in the stomach (making it less acidic).
Antacids are best taken when symptoms occur, for example after meals or at bedtime. This means they stay in the stomach for longer and have more time to work.
Antacids shouldnt be taken at the same time as other medicines, because they can stop other drugs being properly absorbed by your body and may damage the special coating on some tablets. Always consult your GP before you stop taking any medicines, or if you arent sure which other drugs you can take at the same time.
Antacids containing magnesium tend to have a laxative effect, and those containing aluminium can trigger constipation. Antacids containing both magnesium and aluminium may reduce these side-effects.
Alginates
Alginates are useful when there is reflux of stomach acid (when acid is brought back up into the oesophagus). They form a foam layer that floats on the surface of the stomach contents, preventing acid reflux and protecting the lining of the oesophagus.
Alginates work best when taken after meals and bedtime.
H2 Antagonists e.g. cimetidine, famotidine, ranitidine.
These medicines are useful if antacids and alginates dont work. They reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach.
H2 Antagonists are usually a short-term treatment option.
You should consult your GP before taking them if:
You have had to take an indigestion remedy continuously for 4 or more weeks. You are 45 years or older with new or recently changed symptoms of indigestion. You have unintended weight loss in association with indigestion.Higher strength tablets/capsules and other types of H2 antagonists are available on prescription.
Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI) e.g. omeprazole.
Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) also work by reducing the amount of acid produced by your stomach.
Omeprazole is the only Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) available without a prescription. It may be sold for the short-term treatment of indigestion. However, you need to consult your GP first if:
You have had to take an indigestion remedy continuously for 4 or more weeks. You are 45 years or older with new or recently changed symptoms of indigestion. You have unintended weight loss in association with indigestion.Higher strength tablets/capsules of omperazole and other types of PPI are available on prescription.

I’m having severe pain in throat hurts to lay down and feels like something stuck in there can someone help?
I’ve been feeling bad all day, I can’t figure it out at first it feels like a bad case of heartburn, and now it seems to be getting stinging pain like when I swallow and it hurts in the middle of my back ? Could it pneumonia or something else? If anybody has ideas or has had this before I would really like to know ? Cause I can’t get to a doctor right now. Maybe someone would have some kind of home remedy I could try?
OK, without knowing much about you age, health, weight extra. We can go two ways. Heart attacks can feel like a bad case of heartburn. The pain can radiate to arms, jaws, back it can make you nauseous also. You could possibly have a hiateal (sp)hernia. This is a hole in the top of your stomach that then allows acid to back up into your esophagus. It then if goes untreated can cause ulcers on the lining of the esophagus. You could also have just a simple case of heartburn. Have you tried over the counter medication. Tagment or Zantac seem to work quickly also pepcid. What ever it is you still need to see a doctor. Even with just the heartburn that can lead into ulcers. Ulcers can rupture and you can bleed to death. so please do not take any of this lightly. Good luck to you hope you feel better soon, D & G Gifts Etc
Heartburn Causes, Effects And Prevention
Most people have stomach acid reflux at some time in their lives, either as heartburn or acid regurgitation. When refluxed stomach acid touches the lining of the esophagus, it causes a burning sensation in the chest or throat called heartburn. The burning, pressure, or pain of heartburn can last as long as 2 hours and is often worse after eating.
Almost everyone gets heartburn sometimes, but persistent heartburn or chronic heartburn may be cause for concern. What works best to treat heartburn depends on what foods or other factors may be causing the heartburn. Anyone who suffers from persistent heartburn, typically defined as heartburn symptoms experienced two or three times per week, should have their symptoms evaluated by their physician. Even people who experience symptoms only once a week may feel that they have persistent heartburn.
Tomatoes and citrus fruits are foods that cause heartburn in some people. These highly acidic foods can lead to excess stomach acid and may cause heartburn. The causes of heartburn vary from individual to individual. Some people are not bothered by tomatoes or oranges, but may be bothered by fried or spicy foods. It is sometimes necessary to keep a food diary to isolate the foods that cause heartburn in your own diet.
The typical American diet includes many foods that may cause heartburn. Fried foods, spicy foods and fats of all kinds can lead to heartburn. The tendency to eat two or three large meals as opposed to several smaller meals throughout the day probably causes a lot of cases of heartburn. Symptoms often follow large meals and lead to the need for antacids or heartburn herbal remedies. Eating a small meal every couple of hours may not only be what helps with heartburn, but what helps one lose extra pounds. Overweight people experience heartburn more often than those who are at their ideal weight.
Stress, smoking, drinking alcoholic or carbonated beverages and even certain types of exercise are all heartburn causes and treatments of heartburn that are effective often include efforts to reduce stress and smoking; drinking more water, less sodas and beer. While moderate regular exercise is helpful, squatting, bending and running can bring on or worsen heartburn. Any exercise, other than a leisurely stroll, that follows a meal, particularly a large one, will often bring on heartburn.
Efforts to reduce stress, eating in a relaxed environment, chewing slowly may all help prevent heartburn. Eating on the run is one of the leading causes of heartburn. It is next to impossible to avoid everything that may cause heartburn all the time, but it is possible to quit smoking, eat smaller meals, get regular exercise and avoid alcohol and carbonated beverages. Anyone who experiences heartburn two or three times per week should have their symptoms evaluated by a physician. The best treatment for heartburn may be a prescription drug, but should include lifestyle changes and efforts to avoid the leading causes of heartburn, as well.
Some companies that sell herbs and other natural products have concoctions that include a combination of herbs for frequent heartburn prevention as well as heartburn relief. A combination of herbs for heartburn relief may be more effective than just one type of herb. Fennel and mint oils are commonly recommended, but some doctors advise that mint of any kind can bring on heartburn. Whenever you are buying herbs and other natural products, you should choose an established company that sells a number of different products, not just herbs for heartburn relief.

Could this be caused by a Hiatal Hernia?
I had an endoscopy today and was informed by the nurse that they found a small Hiatal Hernia.
However I do not have any pain whatsoever, but my bowels will start gurgling very shortly after eating alot of foods that I used to have no problems with.
For example, all fruit even a little bit, will cause this problem. Pasta will also cause this.
Also Juice and milk will cause this.
Could this be caused by the Hiatal Hernia? I see the doctor in a couple of weeks, so I’ll be able to discuss this with him. But in the mean time, I would like to know if others have had these symptoms?
I’ve been having these symptoms for about two years and its been getting progressively worse until now I can basically drink only water and even that overactivates my bowels.
So the endoscopy was done to determine why.
First of all, why were you having the endoscopy…you didn’t say? Second, hiatal hernia’s are EXTREMELY common, especially in people over the age of 40 and usually do not cause any discomfort. See? You didn’t even know you had one, you lucky ducky! Also, an endoscopy can irritate your inards a bit and might cause you some gas or diarrhea afterward for a few days. In the meantime, I would suggest that you keep a food diary and “symptoms” after your meals to discuss with your doc. I wouldn’t fret; just eat slowly and watch your fat intake…oh and “moderation in all things” helps too. Godloveya.
Hiatal Hernia Symptoms
Before going into the symptoms of a hiatal hernia let’s just give a general overview of what we are talking about. A hiatal hernia occurs when a small part of the stomach begins pushing up through the diaphragm. Many times this won’t lead to any form of symptoms. But many that are suffering from hiatal hernia know that symptoms can arrive over time. When symptoms do come about they are first led by gastroesophageal reflux disease that comes about. This is called GERD. This is where stomach acids and digestive enzymes work in the esophagus through a weakened sphincter. The sphincter is supposed to act as a one way door between the esophagus and stomach. Hiatal hernia will weaken the sphincter muscle over time. At first these symptoms can be mild and then build over time.
Heartburn will also become prevalent to people with hiatal hernia. This where acid will come back up the esophagus and in extreme cases back into the mouth. This will happen most times after a meal. Next up is an influence of gas into your system. A hiatal hernia is one of the top reasons for excessive belching. This can become very uncomfortable over time for you and those around you.
As time progress you may experience more symptoms including abdominal discomfort. This abdominal pain can also venture into your chest. This happens because the stomach becomes trapped above the diaphragm. Also a protrusion of the stomach through the diaphragm muscle can occur.
In rare cases a fixed hiatal hernia will cut off the blood to the trapped portion of the stomach. This can cause great pain quickly and serious illness. When one suffers from this it is called strangulated hiatal hernia and they need immediate medical attention.
Below I compiled a list of most frequent hiatal hernia symptoms. Note that some symptoms are not specific just to hiatal hernia and could be related to some other disease. So please make sure to consult with your doctor before making any decisions.
- excessive burping
- excessive belching
- sour taste in the mouth
- chest pain (could be easily confused with heart attack since pain occurs in a similar location – don’t wait and call 911 if you’re not sure what it is).
- heartburn
- swallowing difficulties (dysphagia)
At this moment there is no easy way to reverse or remove hiatal hernia. So the best way is just to mitigate its symptoms. Most popular treatment options include loosing weight, not eating acidic food, PPIs like prilosec and nexium, tums, wedge pillow.
I write educational articles about hiatal hernia and heartburn to make people aware about all treatment options available.
