What do you do if you have indigestion and it feels like you have something stuck in your throat?

I’m pregnant

Indigestion is when you feel uncomfortable or have pain after eating. The medical name for indigestion is dyspepsia.
Indigestion is very common and most people have it from time to time. For some people its very mild and doesnt happen very often perhaps only after a large meal or particularly rich food. For others, it can be very painful, and sometimes feels as if you are having a heart attack.
Indigestion isnt a disease or condition, but a collection of symptoms. The main symptom is pain in the chest, which is often called heartburn. Feeling bloated, uncomfortably full or having a lot of wind (burping) are other symptoms.
Indigestion can sometimes be a sign of a condition affecting the digestive system. You should see your GP if you get indigestion a lot, it is particularly painful or you suddenly start getting it after never having it before.
The main symptom of indigestion is pain in the chest or top of the abdomen. This usually comes on soon after eating or drinking, but there can sometimes be a delay between eating a meal and having indigestion.
Heartburn is another common term used to describe indigestion symptoms. It is usually felt as a burning pain behind the breastbone (in the front of your chest, over the heart). Heartburn happens when acid from the stomach is regurgitated (brought back up) into the oesophagus (gullet). This is called acid reflux.
If heartburn is very painful, it can sometimes feel as if you are having a heart attack.
Heartburn is also one of the main symptoms of is gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). For most people, heartburn only happens occasionally after a particularly big, fatty or spicy meal. GORD should be suspected if symptoms occur often and after any type of food.
Other symptoms of indigestion include:
Loss of appetiteNausea and vomiting.Flatulence, burping or belching.
Treatment depends on what is causing your indigestion.
If you have been diagnosed with a related condition, such as peptic ulcer or gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, you can find more information about treatment in the topics listed in the Health Encyclopaedia.

For most mild cases of indigestion, making simple changes to your diet and lifestyle can help:
Eat small, regular mealsReduce the amount of fat in your dietAvoid foods that you know trigger symptoms, such as spicy or rich foodsCut down on the amount of alcohol you drinkStop smokingManaging stress better and sleeping slightly propped up on two pillows can also help.
Your GP may recommend making changes to your current medication if they think it is causing the problem. (You should not stop taking any medication without consulting your GP first).
Non-prescription medicines
You can buy a range of non-prescription medicines from your pharmacy to help relieve mild indigestion, including:
Antacids e.g. magnesium trisilicate, magnesium hydroxide, aluminium hydroxide.
Antacids are useful for occasional bouts of indigestion. They relieve symptoms by neutralising the acid in the stomach (making it less acidic).
Antacids are best taken when symptoms occur, for example after meals or at bedtime. This means they stay in the stomach for longer and have more time to work.

Antacids shouldnt be taken at the same time as other medicines, because they can stop other drugs being properly absorbed by your body and may damage the special coating on some tablets. Always consult your GP before you stop taking any medicines, or if you arent sure which other drugs you can take at the same time.
Antacids containing magnesium tend to have a laxative effect, and those containing aluminium can trigger constipation. Antacids containing both magnesium and aluminium may reduce these side-effects.
Alginates
Alginates are useful when there is reflux of stomach acid (when acid is brought back up into the oesophagus). They form a foam layer that floats on the surface of the stomach contents, preventing acid reflux and protecting the lining of the oesophagus.
Alginates work best when taken after meals and bedtime.
H2 Antagonists e.g. cimetidine, famotidine, ranitidine.
These medicines are useful if antacids and alginates dont work. They reduce the amount of acid produced by the stomach.
H2 Antagonists are usually a short-term treatment option.
You should consult your GP before taking them if:
You have had to take an indigestion remedy continuously for 4 or more weeks. You are 45 years or older with new or recently changed symptoms of indigestion. You have unintended weight loss in association with indigestion.Higher strength tablets/capsules and other types of H2 antagonists are available on prescription.
Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPI) e.g. omeprazole.
Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) also work by reducing the amount of acid produced by your stomach.
Omeprazole is the only Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) available without a prescription. It may be sold for the short-term treatment of indigestion. However, you need to consult your GP first if:
You have had to take an indigestion remedy continuously for 4 or more weeks. Acid Reflux Pain?

Ever since I woke up this morning which was about 8:30am its now 10:55am.I have been having chest heaviness, stomach pain almost like its bruised, and nausea with a bad taste in my mouth. It also hurts when I breathe. I am only 20 so…I am not sure if I should see if this passes… It could just be acid reflex maybe and I don’t want to go to the doctor for a stupid reason such as that. Anyone have any ideas?

If it is acid reflux how do I make the pain stop?
I took 3 tums so hopefully that works. This is the first time I have ever had it at least thats why am a little freaked out.
The tums helped. I am going to see an ENT specialist for my thyroid so I will mention this to him and see what I should so.Thank you all for your replies.

I have GERD…………acid reflux that includes my gastointestinal and my esophogus. Trust me, going to the dr for acid reflux is a good thing. When the acid comes into your mouth, it can really ruin your teeth. It can even cause Cancer. Do be sure to get this checked out. Don’t wait because you think it is not important enough to see a dr. I waited when I had acid reflux, thinking it was just something everyone has now and then. Now, we are watching me closely, since my esophogus has holes in it (often making it VERY difficult to breath at all), and I nearly strangle with the reflux coming into my mouth. Take Care…………

Stop Acid Reflux Now- Cure Your Heartburn With a Red Delicious Fruit

Can you actually stop acid reflux now with a natural cure? The answer is yes and you can actually free yourself permanently from the chains of acid reflux. Millions of people, including you, know the miserable symptoms associated with acid reflux: painful heartburn, the burning of stomach acid, gagging, chest pains, constant discomfort and even nausea. But do you really have to suffer with this the rest of your life?

You might have to if you choose to treat your acid reflux with antacids. And if you are sick of antacids, you are not alone. Not only are antacids only making the problem worse, they are only fooling you into thinking that you are controlling the problem.

When in fact, you are only damaging your esophagus and sphincter worse. And my dad was in the same situation as you are in almost 30 years ago. He suffered from acid reflux, heartburn, hiatal hernia, gastritis, esophageal reflux and bile reflux. He also had a nearly fatal stomach surgery that could have cost him his life. But after thousands of antacids and even a surgery, he found the best cure for heartburn was a simple piece of fruit!

Retracing His Steps- A Cure for Heartburn

How could he stop acid reflux now? It is actually a pretty simple story. My dad, Bob Barton, was a severe acid reflux sufferer. It got so bad that doctors performed a simple stomach surgery to repair the reflux damage. But because of complications during surgery, my dad spent the next year of his life vomiting at least 4 times a day.

He describes it as the worse year of his life. It was literally a living nightmare. Acid reflux was destroying his health and his life. And after countless attempts of trying to cure acid reflux, a miracle occurred…

My dad finally slept the whole night (this hasn’t happened in a year)! Though he couldn’t figure out why? After back-tracking his previous night, the only thing he did differently was he ate an apple. In the next week, my dad learned how to stop acid reflux now!

My dad cured his heartburn with a red apple. From then on, my dad has since been known as Johnny Appleseed because of his ability to carry apple slices everywhere!

Can an Apple Stop Acid Reflux Now?

Maybe the old cliché of “An apple a day keeps the doctor away” was right? And maybe it will also keep the acid reflux away? Though you might want to experiment, you have my guarantee that you can naturally cure acid reflux permanently. Many of my thousands of customers have fully healed and strengthened their esophagus and sphincter which keeps stomach acids in the stomach!

And in some cases, a red delicious apple will work! But there are numerous other natural remedies that have been proven to work by healing the esophagus and sphincter.
