natural remedies for acid reflux/heartburn
I am looking for information on how I might help reduce my acid reflux/hearburn so that I do not have to always be on medication. I know coffee and alcohol and tobacco are triggers and am making attmepts to cut back on all three, especially coffee which seems to be my main trigger. what kind of natural treatments can I take. I thought I heard of papya enzyme for help. anyone know of any good info.
I am a great believer of the original ancient health science, the Ayurveda. They were here loong before the Medical Mafia and henchmen in the Pharmaceutical Industry took over like weeds from the natural healers. Here are some suggestions to help you :
Chamomile is a relaxant, and anti-inflammatory remedy that tones up digestion, provided acidity is caused by eating rich foods and stress. Lemon Balm herb will be also helpful, if stress is major cause of complaint. Meadow sweet or Filipendula Ulmaria, is a natural non iritating source of aspirin or salicylates and reduces acidity.
Slippery Elm (Ulmus Fulva) soothes the inflamed stomach or gullet and will justify its name by going down, coating and soothing the mucus membranes of digestive system. Mix a TSP in water or take tablets.
Excessive acidity can be dispelled by using hot compresses of Chamomile or Lavender (l0 drops) in a bowl of water and then used. It will give almost instant relief from spasm and inflammation which generally accompany hyperacidity. If the discomfort is too great, add 1-2 drops of oils of either of these oils to base oil and then applied over whole abdomen, or more so on the area (abdominal) affected most.
Take lemon juice, (mixed with a cup of water) and add some rock salt to taste. This may be taken 1-2 hours prior to taking meals, or lemon may be used with meals. It will also remove constipation-one of the contributory causes of acidity.
The best way to treat this trouble is to have lots of fresh radishes. For taste you may add carrots and tomatoes but not salt. The chlorine discharged by radish is very effective to clear the extra acidic contents from the blood. If you like, you must add a little of rock salt to make it more tasty. Drinking the juice of radish would also be very helpful. But drink this juice immediately after extracting it because the gas it has gets lost when kept for long.
Chewing a piece of harad is an age old remedy.
Drink coconut water 3-4 times a day.
Have a plateful of water melon or cucumber (kheera) every hour.
Harad juice, 1-2 teaspoon daily after meals is very effective in controlling acidity. The juice can be mixed with an equal amount of amla juice for better results. To take out amla juice, grate an amla and squeeze the pulp through a clean muslin cloth to get juice.
Latin name : Terminalia Chebula English Name: Myrobalan
Harad fruit is used for hyperlipidemia and digestive disorders, including diarrhea and constipation, as well as indigestion. It is also used orally as a hepatoprotectant and for respiratory conditions, including respiratory tract infections, cough, and sore throat. It is also used orally for dysentery. It is useful in asthma, vomiting, eye diseases, heart diseases, hiccup, etc.
The HARAD fruit is one of the three constituents of the famous Indian preparation Triphala, other two being – Amla (EMBLICA OFFICINALIS) & Bahera (Terminalia Belerica).
Take a tiny piece of jaggery (gur), unrefined date sugar, every hour. Just keep it in the mouth and slowly suck it till acidity subsides.
Take dried blossom of tulsi, ( Holy Basil or just Basil ) rind of the neem tree, ( available in Florida and India but difficult elsewhere ) black pepper and peepal in even quantity and grind them to powder form. Take 3 gms of this powder every morning and evening with plain water. All the acidic effect of the body passes out with urine and sweat. But remember, never to take milk with tulsi leaves which might afflict your skin.

GERD and fibromyalgia?
Is there a connection between the 2? I suffer from IBS as well, that I know is related to fibro. What is a good natural remedy for GERD or OTC product, cause I have to take Propain Forte and DF 118, but the ibuprofen I cut out totally, because I think it is the root of it.
I don’t think there is a connection. But there is a connection between GERD and drinking carbonated beverages.
http://heartburn.about.com/cs/complic6/a/cancer_risk.htm
I found that both my GERD and IBS were related to eating wheat. Lots of people never consider that connection. Wheat(or gluten) sensitivity can also cause what appears to be lactose intolerance. The wheat problem allows the milk protein to stimulate the immune system into apparent allergic response to milk products.
Fibromyalgia is a very complicated disorder. There are so many things that it causes problems with. Be patient and keep a diary of everything you consume, experience and inhale daily. Eventually you will see patterns. Keep reading, the more you read the more you will understand.

Bloating is when you retain water, you’re fingers swell, your pants are a little tight. Drink lots a water, it’s a natural diuretic…
Abdominal Bloating – Information on Abdominal Bloating
Abdominal bloating and distension occur extremely commonly in the functional gastrointestinal disorders with many patients ranking them as particularly intrusive symptoms. Characteristically, the problem is exacerbated by meals, fluctuates in intensity, is worse at the end of the day and settles overnight. When these symptoms follow this pattern, they are almost path gnomonic of a functional gastrointestinal disorder and it is somewhat surprising that their diagnostic utility has not been harnessed more often. This is in part because these features do not appear to be so common in men, but to some extent, this is because men describe the problem differently often referring to it as a ‘hardness’ or ‘tightness’ of the abdomen. Probably the best way to view these features is that when they are present, they make the possibility of a functional bowel disorder almost certain but when absent, they don’t exclude the diagnosis.
Abdominal bloating is a condition in which the abdomen feels full and tight. It is usually caused by gas in the bowel. Bloating is largely caused by intestinal gas. Intestinal gas can result from eating gassy foods or swallowing air. Swallowing air while eating is often done unconsciously and may result in frequent belching during or after meals. To avoid swallowing air, slow down when eating, don’t ’slurp’ drinks, and don’t talk while chewing. Also try to avoid chewing gum, hard candy, carbonated beverages such as soda pop, and drinking through straws.
The most common symptoms of gas are belching, flatulence, abdominal bloating, and abdominal pain. However, not everyone experiences these symptoms. The determining factors probably are how much gas the body produces, how many fatty acids the body absorbs, and a person’s sensitivity to gas in the large intestine. Chronic symptoms caused by too much gas or by a serious disease are rare.
Hormonal Bloating for premenopausal women, bloating is often related to the menstruation. During the last two weeks of the menstrual cycle, known as the luteal phase, women can retain water, which causes swelling in not only the abdomen, but also sometimes in the hands, feet and breasts.
The rising levels of hormones also have a direct effect on the gastointenstinal tract. “This hormonal effect causes the GI tract not to empty as quickly and to produce gas,” explains Dr. Grace Janik, director of Reproductive Endocrinology at St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee.
Starches are another common source of intestinal gas. Starches are polysaccharides that are produced by plants and are composed of long chains of sugars. Common sources of different types of starch include wheat, oats, potatoes, corn, and rice. Rice is the most easily digested starch and little undigested rice starch reaches the colon and the colonic bacteria. Accordingly, the consumption of rice produces little gas. In contrast, the starches in wheat, oats, potatoes, and, to a lesser extent, corn, all reach the colon and the bacteria in substantial amounts.
Avoid chewing gum if you’re prone to bloating – it can cause you to swallow a lot of air. Eliminate all carbonated beverages from your diet. Carbonation in general is a potential trigger for IBS attacks, and it’s particularly likely to exacerbate bloating. Have a nice hot cup of fennel tea instead of soda pop or sparkling water, follow the and practice the bloating-specific yoga poses, and you should notice a tremendous improvement.

Natural remedies to cure hiatal hernia?
I’ve been diagnosed with a hiatal hernia, swelling in part of my esophagus and GERD although I don’t suffer from heartburn too often . I am a non-smoker, not overweight and assume this has been brought on by considerable stress. At any rate, are there any natural cures that might be offered, as I’m not big on conventional meds, the side effects appear to be as damaging as the diagnosis! I will share what I have tired so far, that has not been effective…”an apple a day”, ginger tea, table spoon of honey daily, digestive enzymes, evening primrose. Any other suggestions?! You’re advice will be greatly appreciated.
I agree completely with n8ivCaliGrl but would add just one thing. Add liquid Lobelia to the warm water, just a few drops.
Lobelia is a muscle relaxer and a hiatal hernia is a kink in the esophagus, similar to the kink that can develop in a garden hose when it gets twisted. The Lobelia will relax the spasm that keeps it kinked.
Add a little massge as you drop down on your heals. Massage from high between the ribs all the way down to the belly button in one vigorous stroke as you drop.
Good Luck!
How to Halt Heartburn With 3 Home Remedies
Classical solutions only give alleviation in the short-term for heartburn, at the cost of multiple secondary effects, do not amount to much in the way of being truly effective and safe options for the long term. Happily, home remedies can bring relief speedily and safely for most heartburn patients when chosen and used correctly. So just how should home remedies be used to halt heartburn? After frustration with ineffective conventional solutions in medicine, this answer is now available for tens of millions of sufferers all over the world.
Heartburn is something that happens while eating or shortly afterwards. It’s a feeling of burning pain in the region of the chest or the throat. When it happens more than twice a week, it may be a sign that GERD (gastro esophageal reflux disease), or to give it its other name, acid reflux, is present.
It is the stomach acids that corrode the epithelial cells of the esophagus that cause the pain known as heartburn. GERD is the more advanced case of this problems when the muscle (the lower esophageal sphincter) between the opening between the esophagus and the stomach opens at the wrong moment and lets stomach acid “reflux” or flow into the esophagus backwards from the stomach.
As time passes, recurrent acid reflux can do enough severe damage to the lower esophagus for it to pass into a condition called Barrett’s esophagus and even cancer. This explains why a speedy solution to stop GERD is required. Other than heartburn, acid reflux can also be recognized by a salty mouth taste, sensations of nausea, chronic hoarse voice, asthma as a nocturnal phenomenon and dry coughing.
Aspects contributing to GERD can be:
1. Improper eating including meals that are too large with subsequent blockage of digestion, over stocking of toxins and over production of stomach acids.
2. For obese people, the backpressure from the abdomen acts in turn on the stomach contents and forces this back towards the esophagus. With the negative effect on the immune system, Candida can then get out of control as yet another negative factor in your acid reflux problem.
3. Bad sleep hygiene also depresses your immune system.
Nevertheless, simple and easily obtainable home remedies are available to work on the symptoms of GERD, even if they do not extend to the elimination of fundamental causes:
1. Natural honey (pure, unprocessed and unheated in 2 teaspoons,) ingested after a meal will lessen esophageal inflammation because of its well-known features of being antioxidant and antibiotic. It is also antibacterial and antiviral.
2. This will also assist in getting back the right acid alkaline balance in the intestines (acid reflux is often more pronounced when there is excess acidity in the intestines and the blood). On similar principles, organic apple cider vinegar (taken in a quantity of a tablespoon on an empty stomach taken once a day) will work with the intestines to get rid of toxins and impurities, thanks to its antiseptic and antibiotic nature.
3. Inclining the whole surface of your bed, feet downwards, also helps. Use shorter legs at the far end where your feet go, or use wooden blocks to raise the head of the bed with wooden blocks, for example. A difference of six to eight inches like this helps to raise your esophagus above the stomach and its gastric juices.
These methods are certainly candidates for immediate and safe relief, but they are still short-term measures. The only long-term solution is a full, holistic, all-natural treatment, to permanently eradicate your acid reflux problem by addressing the hidden, root causes of GERD.

Do you have any home remedies for heartburn/acid reflux?
I tried almonds last night for it and it worked wonders. I just was curious if anyone else has ever tried it.
One of the best ways to deal with acid reflux disorder is by making lifestyle changes. The foods that you consume can have a real affect on your acid reflux symptoms. There are foods that you can incorporate into your diet to relieve acid reflux pain. One of the great remedies is a tea made from anise, peppermint, and lavender. The combination is soothing, reducing the acidic content of your stomach. The mixture can be made with a bit of honey to make it a bit tastier. Anise helps your digestion while peppermint calms heartburn and gas. Lavender is a soothing body aid that also reduces stomach acid.
Certain fruits also help with acid reflux because of enzymes that aid digestion. Try adding a papaya or a pineapple to each meal. Papaya helps aid in digestion and pineapple reduces inflammation, and the high enzyme content can help stop acid reflux. For people that don’t care for pineapple or papayas, chicory root is a great alternative. Boil it in water, allow it to cool, and drink it as a soothing tea.
Another way to ward off acid reflux symptoms is to eat more salad. Incorporating a salad into your daily meal plan is a great way to reduce the painful symptoms of acid reflux. Best of all, salads are healthy, containing nutrients your body needs to flourish.
Hope this helps…

any home remedies for heartburn?
I dont like medication, I only want to use it for serious issues, cause you can always hear about the negative effects on your body and I just wanna live more healthy. I also like to live like people in the history. so what could I do for the heartburn? and I’ll get checked with the doctor cause I keep getting it more often, maybe something is wrong, but what could I do to ease the burning???????????????????
peppermint or spearmint tea, or 1 t of baking soda in 6 oz of water will do the trick for now.
The best way is to figure out what gave you the heartburn in the first place and not eat that again.
HOW?
What did you eat 5 minutes before you got the heartburn. There is a fair chance that is what gave you the heartburn. If you were only eating one thing, you are in luck! (I don’t care if you love it like I used to love peanuts! Don’t eat it again)
If you ate a heavy meal and then you got heartburn, it will be more complicated, but not impossible. Eliminate all of those things from you diet, then add one back in. No problem? Add another one. No problem? Good. Leave that one for later and add a new one (notice you are only adding one thing at a time to the first one that was okay) If you get heartburn, eliminate the first thing that you did not get heartburn with, and eat the newly added thing and see if you get heartburn with it alone. If so, eliminate it forever. If not, you know then that you cannot eat the first heartburn free thing at the same time that you eat this one, but you can eat this one alone. Keep on experimenting until you find out what you ate that gave you heartburn, then just eliminate the item or the combination.

Heartburn home remedies anyone?
I recently had another heartburn flare up. Not this bad for several years. My doctor does not think it’s my heart. I am on the 14 day Prilosec in the morning and Zantac after dinnner. I am not sure if the stuff is working or not. Do you guys know of any over the counter remedies to try? Or foods? Chamimille tea seems to help.
You’re asking for home remedies and well most people who recommend home remedies will ‘preach’ to ya that you need to cure the cause not cover up the symptoms.
Find out what’s causing the heartburn. Just something simple as eating too fast, eating and drinking @ the same time, the way you lie down in bed. These factors can play a part if you experience heartburn.
I don’t have my books to share some natural/home remedies on heartburn.
